Women everywhere wanted Taye Diggs to help them get their groove back when he made his film debut opposite an older–and wiser–Angela Bassett in 1998’s How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The flick introduced us to the concept of the modern “cougar” well before Demi and Ashton. But hunky Taye–which is actually his nickname and comes from the playful pronounciation of Scotty as in “Scottay” (his full name is Scott Leo Diggs)–actually got his start on Broadway. In 1996, he originated the role of the nasty landlord Benny in Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Rent. After stints in productions of Chicago and Wicked, he landed on the soap, Guiding Light. And then, of course, came Stella, which put on the proverbial map.
These days, he’s best known as the sexy Dr. Sam Bennett on the medical drama tv series, Private Practice, which premiered in 2007 on ABC. A spin-off of the cult-followed Grey’s Anatomy, the series chronicles the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery, played by Kate Walsh, who is currently in a romantic relationship on the show with the “Mc-Steamier” and “McDreamier” Sam. Taye married his Rent co-star actress Idina Menzel in’03 and they have a 1 1/2 year-old son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs.
