The gorgeous Jessica Chastain just had her Broadway debut this month, with the play “The Heiress”. The play was also Dan Stevens’s debut (Matthew Crawley of Downton Abbey), so it attracted a large crowd who were curious about the two actors’ performance. The 1947 drama is based on a Henry James novella and Chastain’s staging has received mixed reviews from the critics. The Hollywood Reporter calls the actress “underpowered” and laments her “inconsistency of characterization,” while the New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincantelli was disappointed that Chastain failed to bring more fury to the play’s most famous line, when Sloper (n.n. Chastain) declares, “Yes, I can be cruel. I have been taught by masters!” While her Broadway debut wasn’t welcomed with open arms, not the same can be said about Chastain’s Hollywood career. The redhead has just leaped up in the Oscar race for her leading role in Zero Dark Thirty. This threatens Jennifer Lawrence who is a favorite in the race, for her role on Silver Linings Playbook.
