Several straight and gay celebrities join the Twitter frenzy to celebrate the unconstitutional ruling of the Defense of Marriage Act.
Wednesday, June 26th 2013, marks the biggest advance gay people have seen this generation, concerning their civil rights. Not only has the Defense of Marriage Act been ruled as unconstitutional, but another appeal was overruled in California, making the right to gay marriage legal again in the state. The law had been signed by Bill Clinton in 1996, and it implied several legal rights being unrecognized to same sex couples: social security benefits, federal tax, immigration, and even the right to be notified of the partner’s death.
The hashtags #loveislove and #marriageequality dominated Twitter yesterday, as the news was being announced and acknowledged. Celebrities were part of the celebrationas well, and here is what some of them tweeted:
Rachel Zoe: “What a major step forward for #marriageequality—beyond excited & proud of this country today! #loveislove @BarackObama“
Barack Obama: “Today’s DOMA ruling is a historic step forward for #MarriageEquality. #LoveIsLove”
Rebecca Black: “#DOMA IS DEAD! Incredible. #marriageequality”
Lady Gaga: “Today is a good day for gay rights but remember there is more work to be done #DOMA #loveislove pic.twitter.com/ptI5M8ZS6t”
Kristen Bell: “@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove”
Nina Garcia: “A good friend of mine just called me. One sentence explains his mood: tears of joy #MarriageEquality”
Dianna Agron: “Watching the love spout about back at home from across the pond. Love is love is love is love. It’s wonderful.”
Russel Brand: ““If you’re gay married in California your gay marriage is now legal. Good. #allmarriageisabitgay””
