The highly anticipated ceremony took place last night, and some actors left happier than others:
Host Ellen DeGeneres knows how to have fun. After starting with a hilarious speech, the presenter “broke” Twitter by posting this selfie of herself with Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and more, captioned: “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars”. Naturally, it was a huge success with over 1 million favorites and 2.3 million retweets.
After stunning at the BAFTA Awards in matching tuxedos, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie went for something more traditional on Oscar night. Brad Pitt was there to support 12 Years a Slave, in which he had a small part, while Angie had an award to present. She wore a stunning Elie Saab dress with lots and lots of sparkle, while her partner chose Tom Ford.
Julia Roberts went with a classic Givenchy, which was better than we all expected. The black lace dress featured a peplum and lace-covered V-neck, and it showed off the actress’ toned arms.
An unexpected, but very sexy choice, Kate Hudson‘s Versace gown was perfect for the evening. The deep V-neck inspired by the 70s and the couture detailing made the actress shine.
Lady Gaga couldn’t have missed the awards, and she arrived among the last stars, in a Versace gown. Obviously, since she represents the Italian fashion house now.
Sandra Bullock wore navy at the awards, and she did went strapless like we predicted here and here. Her gown was Alexander McQueen, and although it didn’t win her the Best Actress award, it brought her a good spot on the best dressed list.
As a presenter, Anne Hathaway went with a risky dress by Gucci, which featured an armor-like top and a back slit that reminds us of Anglie Left Leg from 2012.
It’s no surprise that Jennifer Lawrence wore Dior. The red peplum gown was strapless and quite basic, which is one step down from last year’s incredible Oscars gown. Jennifer didn’t go home with an award either, but she did manage to tumble again, on her way to the red carpet.
The most impressive Dior gown, however, was worn by Charlize Theron, who presented an award yesterday evening. Her black mermaid dress featured a deep V-neck and an open back, with sheer fabric around the knees and sheer straps. Charlize looked absolutely stunning.
The Best Actress in a Leading Role, Cate Blanchett, looked magnificent in her Giorgio Armani gown. She said: “It’s heavy, but I love it”, and we very much love it too. Even though she’s a blonde, Cate can pull off nude like it’s nobody’s business.
Probably the most anticipated appearance of the evening was Lupita Nyong’o, who had an incredible first red carpet season. The actress was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and she went home with the statue, while 12 Years A Slave also won Best Picture. Her gown? Custom made by Prada, in a shade of light blue that she said reminds her of Nairobi: “I wanted to have a bit of home”, she said.
Other major awards of the evening went to Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Jared Leto for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (both for Dallas Buyers Club). The big loser of the evening was American Hustle, who had hyped by tons of nominations and no awards.
