The 27 year old twins are the designers behind The Row, Elizabeth and James and Olsenboye, and they have a Council of Fashion Designers of America award to their name, yet they still get the question of how involved they are in the brands. “It’s not like you wake up one day and have a huge company with four or five different companies within the companies, not to mention our past and future,” Ashley tells the magazine. The two are now about to launch two fragrances for Elizabeth and James this month (Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and the same in White), after spending more than a year sniffing different flavors. “I think people looked at us with the perception of ‘Oh, you just have everything. You can do whatever,” Strangers assumed we “had enough money to just do nothing-or why would we go to college? And it’s such an uneducated perspective! You still have to grow within business. You have to take a chance,” Mary-Kate says about people who just assume things without being informed.

In order to dedicate themselves 100% to fashion, the two women gave up acting completely. “I am not great at not being able to control the end product,” Ashley says. We thing their choice was wise, especially since The Row now produces annual sales of $12 million. The sisters haven’t commented on Mary-Kate’s relationship to 44 year old Olivier Sarkozy – which is all the press wants to hear about. They are trying to become more private, after a lifetime of being in the spotlight, and this is evident in their design. Read the whole story in Allure.
